SUNLIGHT IS IMPORTANT FOR WELLNESS

Sunlight is an important source of vitamin D, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones and overall well-being. Vitamin D is produced by the body when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. It helps the body absorb calcium, which is necessary for strong bones and teeth. Sunlight exposure also can improve mood and help with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

However, it's important to note that too much sun exposure can be harmful, as it increases the risk of skin cancer and can cause sunburn, premature aging, and other skin damage. It's recommended to get moderate sun exposure, such as spending 15 to 20 minutes in the sun 2 to 3 times a week, while taking precautions such as wearing sunscreen, protective clothing and seeking shade during the sun's peak hours.

It is also important to note that not everyone can get enough sun exposure to meet their vitamin D needs, such as people with darker skin, older adults, people who are homebound or institutionalized, and people who live in northern latitudes. These groups are at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency and may need to take a supplement or get more exposure to UV lamps to get enough vitamin D.
